Weekend Update

It’s HOT. I mean really HOT. And it’s really dry. It’s so HOT and dry we have barely cut the grass this past month. Yikes!

So this past Saturday we decided to face the heat and trim the bushes in the front of the yard….

And that was about all we did outside during the day ūüôā

Sunday evening we took a bike ride around the neighborhood and took a few pictures. I have come to realize it is so much easier to take pictures in the early morning or late evening. It is a lot easier to figure out the settings of your camera and the natural lighting. I am still working on taking pictures in the middle of the day (I tend to have a bit too much light in the pictures).

BEWARE…the next picture is a little gross. Since it has been so hot and dry outside the small lake has started to drop in water and has started to kill the fish in the lake. Poor guys. Lets hope for rain!

What are you doing to beat the heat? Anyone else noticing water levels dropping near them?

Update: The Living Room

Yikes!  It has definitely been a while since the last blog post.  I apologize.  It has been crazy busy over here and unfortunately blogging was put on the back burner.

This post is all about updates.  The first update is the ottoman.  It is completely finished and in full use!

Here is the current progress on our living room:

We have made more progress on the living in the last 3 months that we have in the past 2 years we have lived here. I am currently on the search for an area rug. I really want a super soft shag area rug. However, I know nothing about the material used in area rugs. I looked at several stores over the weekend and didn’t find what I was looking for. SO I am asking you. Do you have a really soft shag area rug? What type of material is it? Where did you get it? Does it hold up well ( it has to stand up to 3 dogs!)? Can’t wait to hear from you! I hope to purchase/order soon in order to have it in time for the surprise party on December 10!

I’ve been framed

It’s official; I have art on the wall!  Believe it or not it was a lot easier than I
expected!  A while ago I purchased 2 large black frames from Marshall’s on clearance.  They had a few scratches here and there but nothing I couldn’t fix.

I also came across a map of Chicago (where I am from!) over the summer when Borders was closing.

Why not put the two together??

Here I am posing in front of the frame!

I always wanted one of these

I have always wanted an ottoman.¬† Every time I see them at the store I imagine sitting on my couch with my feet nicely placed on the ottoman with a big comfy blanket draped over my legs.¬† Ahhhhh!¬† I am sooo¬†happy to say I finally have one!¬† Yep, that’s right.¬† And¬†although it’s not from a thrift store I did make the entire ottoman…with the help of the husband of course!¬† It’s not 100% finished but it’s about 90% on its way to being completed.

Did I mention we recently just go married on July 23, 2011?¬† Did I also mention we had the wedding in the back yard!¬† More importantly we built a dance floor in our back yard!¬† The reason for telling you this is that after the wedding we had a ton of wood left over.¬† The wood was in great shape and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to throw it away, so we placed it in the¬†garage knowing we would eventually use it again.

Well, fast forward a few months when I come up with this great idea to build an ottoman!¬† Great idea since all I would need to purchase would be the fabric.¬† So that’s exactly what we did.¬† The first step was figuring out the measurements.¬† I knew right away I wanted a longer rectangular shaped ottoman rather than a square ottoman.¬† Here are the measurements below:¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†

With the measurements down it was time to start building.¬† Here is the frame of the lid of the ottoman.¬† We decided to make it like a chest to store extra blankets and throw pillows.¬† Don’t mind the grass, most of it died under the dance floor since it was about 100 degrees that week!¬† We are still trying to grow grass but with the cooler weather it will probably have to wait until next spring.

Sorry about the dog butt!

I wrapped the ottoman frame in fluffy felt to cushion things up a little. I also used a really thick padding for the top of the ottoman…But I forgot to take a picture. Sorry about that!

Finally the big reveal.  I still have a few things left to do such as put the sides onto the ottoman and purchase hinges for the lid.

There you have it. Not bad for only me second upholstery project. Upholstering definately gets easier with each project except the corners. If you ask me they are a pain in the ***. If you know what I mean. I am pretty sure every corner on the ottoman is different. I just can’t seem to get it down. Anyone have any suggestions or easy techniques for the corners. I doubt this will be my last upholstered project and if I come with with any myself I will be sure to share! Hopefully I will have some updated pictures by the weeks end of the ottoman!

Another find

Since deciding to put a little enthusiasm back into my living room I have been finding treasures all over the place.  This past week while driving home from school I found a small wooden end table on the side of the street waiting to be picked up by the garage man the following morning.  I immediately pulled my car over, got out, and shoved it into the back seat!

This past weekend I took it out to the garage to sand it down.¬† As you can see there are lots of nooks and crannies on this table.¬† Sanding was not the easiest…at least when it came down to the legs themselves.¬† But it definitely looks¬†a lot¬†better!

Ultimately, I decided spray painting the table would be a lot easier than stain or regular paint.  So I ran out to the home depot (which is only 5 minutes away :-)) and picked up a dark spray paint.  I figured with 3 black dogs it made a lot more sense then white!

And there you have it.¬† A “new” table for my living room!¬† It’s still out in the garage drying.¬† I also need to figure out where in the living room I am going to put it.¬† But I am in love!¬† It only required 2 even coats of spray paint and I still have extra spray paint¬†for another project!¬† Anyone else find any treasures in the garbage lately?¬† I guess the moral¬†of the story is always keep your eyes open…you never know what and where you’re going to find the next¬†addition¬†to your house!

First blog post…EVER!

This blog is simple.  Like me.  Nothing fancy or over the top.  Plain Jane as I like to say.  I thought blogging would be a great way to share what was going on in my life with family, friends, and a few stranges.

8¬†years¬†ago I met the love of my life, 3 years ago I started teaching, 2 years ago I bought my first house, and¬†2 months ago I married the love of my life.¬†¬†Somewhere in between all of that¬†I manage to be a typical 20 something.¬† I have alot to share and hope someone can benefit from this life of mine.¬† I’m learning as I go and¬†sharing it along the way!
